Two Language Cross-Cultural Puns

We were out driving yesterday and ran across the sign for a small cafe.  It was 8 Na Na.

Get it?

The word for eight in Chinese is “ba”.

You need to know both Chinese and English for the cafe name to make sense.  Banana Cafe.

I love it.

  1. I’m so happy to have stumbled across your blog today. I teach at a middle school in Seattle, and I lived in Taiwan for about a year back in ’93, so I got the joke. 🙂 I’ve enjoyed reading about your adventures as expats in contemporary Taiwan and about your school. Cooking and Robotics classes, how cool! And class sizes of 10! (I work in a public school.) I look forward to more of your stories. Thanks!
